Designers looking to break into the hot metro Ethernet market have a new tool. Accton's ES4826 MetroBox-AS Metro Ethernet access switch supports every deployment scenario, from pure Ethernet access for multitennant units to triple-play service aggregation of Internet Protocol (IP) digital-subscriber-line access multiplexer (DSLAM) and multiservices access network provisioned broadband networks.
For metro access, the ES4826 features L2 switching and L3 routing with both IPv4 and IPv6 unicast and multicast. It supports virtual local-area network and multiprotocol label switching/virtual private local-area network service/hierarchical virtual private local-area network service (MPLS/VPLS/ HVPLS). For triple-play services, it delivers scalable and hierarchical quality of service (QoS) per subscriber for voice, video, or data. With its traffic-management capability, service providers can support latency-and jitter-sensitive Voice over IP along with IPTV, video on demand, and high-bandwidth unicast and multicast data services. The chip also supports DiffServ QoS and 16k queues.
The ES-4826 features fine-grained differentiated priority queuing, bandwidth guarantees, hierarchical traffic shaping, and IP DSLAM aggregation. It complies with the Metro Ethernet Forum's traffic engineering requirements and with the Network Equipment-Building System L3 standard.
Additionally, the ES-4826 has 20 10/100/1000 RJ-45 Ethernet ports, four combo ports (10/100/1000 plus SFP), and two 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) XFP ports. Other features include up to 512k mediaaccess controller addresses, 512k IPv4 addresses, 32k IPv6 addresses, 512k MPLS tunnels, and a 200-ms packet buffer.
Sandburst's HiBeam chips make the ES4826 possible—specifically the FE-1000 forwarding engine and the TME-2000 queuing and traffic management engine. Sandburst must be doing something right, as Broadcom is about to acquire it because of its strong market position.
