Pondering: Silicon Replacement

As semiconductor process technology continues to shrink, the cost associated with manufacturing a new IC using the latest process technology increases over the last generation. These cost increases are forcing companies to look for cheaper alternatives to semiconductor technology. What technology will replace semiconductors and why?
