Is It Time For DAC Again?!?
David Maliniak, EDA Technology Editor
Electronic Design Magazine
Well, yes... I'm afraid it is. The ramp-up to the 44th Design Automation Conference is well underway; the EDA industry is getting ready for its Really Big Show. That means I'm sitting on a good deal of information to share about what EDA vendors will unveil in San Diego on June 4.
So consider this edition of EDA Alert to be a DAC Preview edition, in which I'll spill some portion of the beans. The motherlode of early DAC intelligence, though, will appear in the May 24 issue of Electronic Design and, as of that date, on your nearest Web browser at http://www.electronicdesign.com
See you in San Diego!

Meeting Consumer Demands For Portable Applications
François Clement, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder
Coupling Wave Solutions, Grenoble, France
Consumer markets continually demand cheaper, easier-to-use, and more portable applications. Add to that manufacturing technology trends and these demands have pushed the semiconductor industry to higher levels of integration. Just consider digital applications that combine data processing ?? games, voice, music, and video ?? with memory, encryption, and copyright-protection capabilities on single silicon chips or systems on chip (SoCs) with hundreds of millions of gates. Indeed, this is quite an achievement that required significant innovations in EDA software.

DAC Preview: ESL
As time passes, more bits and pieces of the electronic-system-level (ESL) design and verification flow come together. If you're a fan of ESL methodologies, and in particular of Bluespec's tools and flavor of Verilog, you may wish to visit this year's 44th Design Automation Conference to check out the latest additions to Bluespec's library of pre-packaged IP and design reuse capabilities...

DAC Preview: Front-End Design
It's true that the RTL design flow is largely commoditized. Yet, EDA vendors do still manage to come up with at least incremental gains for their tools and flows. If you're in search of time/cost savings, greater productivity, more efficient and accurate modeling, or any of a number of enhancements, there could well be gold for you somewhere on the DAC show floor...

DAC Preview: Verification
The topic of verification is a perennial hot potato at DAC. Given its status as chief time/resource sink in the overall design cycle, verification and improvements in the process thereof will be of keen interest throughout the 44th DAC...

DAC Preview: Physical Design and Analysis
There are two areas of the design flow that are the ripest for innovation going forward. One is the electronic system level (ESL) at levels of abstraction higher than RTL, and the other is the physical domain, where the ongoing migration to process nodes below 90 nm is placing undue stress on silicon yields. This year's 44th DAC will be a hotbed of news with regard to the back-end flow...
