A Penny For Your Pixels?

Daniel Harris  |   ED Online ID #17970  |   January 11, 2008

With the U.S. dollar plummeting, it’s nice to know how far a penny stretches these days thanks to the DVS-1600 TFT LCD OEM interface controller from Digital View. But a reasonable price tag doesn’t imply the controller board lacks functionality.

On the contrary, the device outputs to TFT LCD video panels supporting resolutions up to UXGA (1600 by 1200 pixels) and WXGA (1366 by 768 pixels). It also supports lower resolutions down to VGA (640 by 480 pixels). Ratios include 4:3, 5:4, 16:9, and 16:10.

With support for multiple inputs, including DVI, VGA, S-Video, and Composite Video, you aren’t left holding the cord. This wide range of video modes, inputs, and outputs makes this device the Swiss Army knife of video interface controllers.

Other features include built-in support for up to 16.7 million colors, an on-screen display menu, serial port control, image scaling, and image control such as brightness, all in a 7- by 4.74-in. package. Its calculated mean time between failures exceeds 260,000 hours, ensuring the device will outlive the end application’s life span.

Priced at $110 in 1000-piece quantities, the DVS-1600 provides nearly a couple hundred pixels per penny—not bad even with the dollar so low. It’s now available off-the-shelf either directly from Digital View or through its distribution network.
