G Systems has delivered a new Console Simulation Unit (CSU) to Lockheed Martin for use in the U.S. Army’s Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Soldier-portable Test Program Set. The CSU was developed under a contact from Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control to create an automated test system to replace an existing labor-intensive, manually operated test instrument.

The test system allows field testing of individual Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) of the MLRS without requiring them to be installed in the system. The CSU provides the input power, loads, and communication paths for each of the LRUs to be tested. It automates all the switching functions by using only two digital outputs to control an I2C two-wire digital serial interface and allows the test controller to interface directly with the CSU to ensure proper test configurations.

“The new system automates the relay switching and automatically logs test results, thereby reducing test time and improving test accuracy by eliminating error-prone manual tasks,” said Russell Blake, G Systems’ senior engineer. Actual test times improved by a factor of five. The CSU is portable yet rugged, having passed rigorous military-specified shock, vibration, and temperature testing in accordance with MIL-PRF-28800F.
