Driver Offers Proportional Solenoid Control Without PLC, Microcontroller

The proportional-control solenoids used in some industrial hydraulic systems are usually driven by microcontrollers or programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Such complex drivers typically require several different supply voltages for logic and control. (The purpose of proportional control is to move the solenoid plunger to an arbitrary position and leave it there.) A set-and-leave solenoid driver, however, should not require a costly PLC or the processing power of a microcontroller. Ideally, it should operate from the solenoid’s own supply voltage.

The TerraMax autonomous truck is based on Oshkosh’s Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) defense truck platform. Most recently, TerraMax competed in the 2007 Darpa Urban Challenge. The MTVR was designed for the US Marine Corps with a 70% off-road mission profile. TerraMax's unmanned ground vehicle kit does not interfere with the conventional operation of the vehicle. A robust sensor suite allows for 360-degree situational awareness around TerraMax. Elements of the autonomous navigation kit could be used to enhance driver awareness. The complete kit could be used in applications such as snow removal on airport runways. Dr. Tony Tether, DARPA director said, "The first autonomous vehicle to be fielded by the military most likely will resemble Oshkosh Truck's TerraMax entry because the military is already using the basic truck it's based on."

The latest version of Accellera’s Verilog-Analog Mixed-Signal (AMS) standard, Verilog-AMS 2.3, unifies the standard’s previous version with IEEE Std. 1364-2005, the Verilog hardware description language (HDL) standard.
Power Companies Join Forces With ZigBee, HomePlug Alliances
A group of electrical utility companies is working with the ZigBee Alliance and the HomePlug Powerline Alliance to develop a common application layer integrated solution for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and home area networks (HAN). Using the capabilities of the ZigBee Smart Energy public application profile as a baseline, the three groups will expand the application layer and enable it to run on HomePlug technology.
