Driver Offers Proportional Solenoid Control Without PLC, Microcontroller

The proportional-control solenoids used in some industrial hydraulic systems are usually driven by microcontrollers or programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Such complex drivers typically require several different supply voltages for logic and control. (The purpose of proportional control is to move the solenoid plunger to an arbitrary position and leave it there.) A set-and-leave solenoid driver, however, should not require a costly PLC or the processing power of a microcontroller. Ideally, it should operate from the solenoid’s own supply voltage.

Featuring National Instruments' CompactRIO real-time programmable automation controller, the Samsung Solorean features one of the most sophisticated electrical systems in solar car "raycing". While the CompactRIO is primarily for battery protection, it also does state-of-charge calculations, cell balancing, array control, cruise control, HMI (via a touch screen), and telemetry. Solar car "rayces" are nationally organized events, with competition among dozens of colleges and universities. The challenge is to design, build, and race the best solar-powered vehicle. The mission is to promote educational excellence and teamwork among all competitors. To accomplish this goal, teams must integrate technical and business expertise across a range of disciplines. TI Working To Develop IEEE 1149.7 2-Pin Debug Spec
Texas Instruments said it will drive the development and ratification of the IEEE 1149.7 standard, a 2-pin test and debug interface that requires half the number of pins of IEEE 1149.1 boundary-scan technology.
Evident Technologies Inc. plans to immediately launch a line of low-power LED and LED-based products that use the company’s semiconductor nanocrystal as a phosphor. The products will be available under a non-exclusive licensing agreement recently signed with Philips Electronics.
The new T6M-100 AdvancedMC (PrAMC) platform from JumpGen Systems incorporates the Tilera TILE64 processor, with 64 cores of general-purpose compute capability running at 700 MHz.
