BroadCom SoC Enables Netflix Streaming To Blu-ray Player

ED News Staff  |   ED Online ID #19975  |   October 20, 2008

The highly integrated BCM7440 Blu-ray Disc system-on-a-chip (SoC) from Broadcom Corp. is powering the LG Electronics BD300, said to be the world’s first Blu-ray player featuring Netflix instant streaming. Using the BD300, Netflix subscribers can stream content over the Internet from a growing library of over 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes, at no additional charge.

The new SoC offers high-definition video playback at 1080p resolution, picture-in-a-picture (PiP) video support, HD multi-channel audio, and world class BD-Java performance for full support of BD-Live functionality. Integrated security and streaming features have enabled manufacturers to leverage the BCM7440 built-in Ethernet port to deploy a new class of Blu-ray players.

The Netflix-ready BD300 Blu-ray Disc player is available now at major retailers, priced at under $350.

“Broadcom has established itself as an innovation leader in the consumer electronics space by enabling a groundbreaking combination of world class Blu-ray disc playback and Netflix instant streaming,” said Bill Holmes, vice president of business development at Netflix. “We are pleased to be working closely with Broadcom to enable broadband streaming of Netflix content directly to Blu-ray Disc players, providing consumers even more viewing choices and elevating the premium home entertainment experience.”
