WATCH EDUCAST ON UNDERSTANDING POWER-OVER-ETHERNET

Overview: The long-awaited version 4.0 of the IEEE 802.3at standard for PoE+ (Power-over-Ethernet Plus) should be approved in the second half of 2009.  It will dramatically change the way products that use power delivered over Ethernet cables are designed. Beyond merely delivering more power to the load than basic 803.3af (25.5W at the Powered-Device input), the advanced PoE standard provides for dynamic network-based energy management via Data Link Layer classification  using LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) and “Power Primitives” that can be communicated between the PD and the Ethernet switch. In this brief presentation, Akros Silicon’s Amit Gattani sums up the features of the new standard and their implications for designers.
