Tiny Linux Suits Renesas Chips

William Wong  |   ED Online ID #21206  |   May 15, 2009

RoweBots Research has delivered a pair of ultra-tiny, Linux-compatible real-time operating systems (RTOSs) for Renesas’ R8C, M16C, and R32C/100 microcontroller families. The DSPnano and Unison are also POSIX-compatible. Both work with Renesas’ High-performance Embedded Workshop (HEW) integrated development environment (IDE). The compact DSPnano targets the 8-, 16-, and 32-bit platforms starting at only 1 kbyte of code. It includes drivers for microcontroller peripheral interfaces such as the serial peripheral interface (SPI) and pulse-width modulation (PWM) plus integration with DSP libraries. The Unison addresses the 32-bit R32C/100. Pricing starts at $3995. The RTOSs also target other vendors’ microcontrollers such as Microchip’s PIC32.
