Step-Up DC-DC Converters Increase Battery Runtimes In Portable Apps

The ADP1612 and ADP1613 step-up dc-dc converters from Analog Devices increase battery runtimes in portable industrial, instrumentation, and consumer applications such as thin-film-transistor (TFT) LCDs or cell phones, where low power consumption is required and board space is at a premium. Designers can use them to boost input voltages as low as 1.8 V up to output voltages as high as 20 V.

Supporting a broad input voltage range (1.8 to 5.5 V for the ADP1612 and 2.5 to 5.5 V for the ADP1613), the adjustable output voltage enables the devices to extend battery life with unregulated input voltage operation. The boost converters use a pulse-width modulation (PWM) current-mode architecture to regulate the output voltage across load conditions and to help reduce the risk of inrush currents at startup.

As a result, the devices can deliver up to 93% efficiency with fast transient response and stable output voltage levels for greater system reliability. Their pin-selectable switching frequency enables them to operate at 650 kHz for maximum efficiency or at 1.3 MHz, enabling the use of smaller external passive components. The ADI SimPower design tool completes this family of boost regulators for faster time-to-market.

Samples of the ADP1612 and ADP1613 are available now in a low-profile, eight-lead, 3- by 3- by 1.1-mm mini small-outline package (MSOP). The ADP1612 costs $1.50 and the ADP1613 costs $1.20, both in 1000-unit quantities.
