Low-Power DAC Family Provides Internal Reference For Industrial Apps

Staff  |   ED Online ID #21279  |   May 28, 2009

The 16-bit DAC8568, 14-bit DAC8168, and 12-bit DAC7568 digital-to-analog converters (DACs) from Texas Instruments target data-acquisition systems, industrial process control, and portable instrumentation. Their internal reference provides temperature drift performance of 2 ppm/°C (typical) up to 5 ppm/°C (maximum) across the entire operating range for twice the accuracy of competitive devices, according to TI. The internal reference, which saves space and cost compared to external references, also offers a high initial accuracy of ±0.004% (typical) and ±0.002% to help eliminate the need for full-scale system calibration.

Additionally, the family’s output glitch energy of 0.1 nV-s reduces undesired transients and noise and leads to lower total harmonic distortion when generating waveforms. Its widest temperature range of –40°C to 125°C helps ensure performance in extreme environments. And, its eight individual DAC channels in a smaller TSSOP-14 or TSSOP-16 package and lowest power of 0.56 mW/channel (including internal reference current) saves power budgets and decreases needed board space.

Available today in a 16-pin TSSOP package, the DAC8568 costs $13.20 in 1000-unit quantities. The DAC8168 and DAC7568 also are available today for $10.20 and $8.20, respectively, in 1000-unit lots as well.
