White Paper: Transformer Design for Charging Defibrillator Capacitors

Flyback topology is used to generate high voltage in transformers and is suitable for applications including defibrillators and photo flashes. This article provides a procedure for transformer design such that the capacitor is charged within a stated time, eliminating over-design approaches and allowing for selection of critical values with confidence.
