LDO Regulators Deliver Precision Power For Core Voltage Rails

Staff  |   ED Online ID #21311  |   June 4, 2009

Analog Devices has introduced a family of low-dropout (LDO) regulators optimized for low input voltage and output voltage operation where low-noise power is needed. Available in 800-mA, 1.2-A, and 2-A load current ranges, the low-VIN, single-rail input ADP1740, ADP1741, ADP1752, ADP1753, and ADP1754 offer improved conversion efficiency and superior power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR) to support today’s high-performance signal chains, according to the company. They also provide a reduced component count and improved thermal performance for lower noise, higher reliability, and smaller solutions for designers developing medical imaging equipment, servers, infrastructure, office automation, and industrial applications.

Further, these regulators convert directly from 1.6- to 3.6-V inputs while delivering –60 dB at 100-kHz PSRR and 160 mV at 2-A dropout performance. This reduces the power wasted when converting from higher inputs and makes printed-circuit board (PCB) Layout much easier. They also incorporate “enable” and “power good” pins that make system health monitoring easy in mission-critical applications, such as 24/7 servers and medical imaging equipment. To improve thermal management and therefore IC reliability, they come in a 4- by 4-mm leadless frame chipset package (LFCSP) with an exposed pad. The exposed EPAD conducts heat away from the LDO, improving thermal conduction to prevent potential failures while providing a small footprint.

Samples are available now. The ADP1752 and ADP1753 cost $0.90. The ADP1754 is $0.95. And, the ADP1740 and ADP1741 cost $1.20. All prices are for 1000-unit quantities. The Analog Devices’ ADIsimPower voltage regulator design tool supports the new devices.
