PWM Motor Driver IC Handles ±1.5-A Continuous Current

Ashok Bindra  |   ED Online ID #2529  |   July 22, 2002

Designed for pulse-width modulation (PWM) motor control, the A3948 integrates on-chip DMOS output transistors in an H-bridge configuration. Consequently, the motor driver chip can handle continuous currents of ±1.5 A and operating voltages up to 50 V. The RDS(ON) for the output DMOS transistors is 270 mΩ (typical). The internal PWM current-control circuitry is configured via a three-wire serial interface. Also, the serial port programs the driver for fast, slow, and mixed-current decay modes. To minimize power consumption when not in use, the IC offers a sleep mode. The unit's internal circuit protection includes thermal shutdown with hysteresis, crossover-current protection, and undervoltage lockout circuitry. Based on the supplier's third-generation ABCD3 process, the A3948 comes in two power packages. The A3948SB is housed in a 24-pin plastic DIP, and the A3948SLB is available in a 24-lead plastic SOIC. Both come with a copper batwing tab for improved power dissipation. The A3948 costs $1.96 in lots of 5000.
