Current-Mode Controller Improves Conversion Efficiency

Ashok Bindra  |   ED Online ID #2557  |   July 22, 2002

The NCP1205 is a pulse-width modulated (PWM) current-mode controller for high-voltage off-line power conversion applications. To cut electromagnetic interference (EMI) and turn-on losses, the NCP1205 operates in a true quasi-resonant (QR) valley switching mode. This mode helps reduce switching frequency when output power demand decreases, thereby improving conversion efficiency in standby mode. NCP1205 Spice models, which can be downloaded from the company Web site, permit transient cycle-by-cycle simulation. Available in eight- and 14-lead plastic DIP packages, the NCP1205 costs $0.65 in lots of 10,000 pieces.
