Dual-Function LDO Controls Microprocessor Resets

Don Tuite  |   ED Online ID #8766  |   October 4, 2004

Regulator designers continue to look for opportunities to differentiate their products by combining functions. Here's a chip for size-challenged battery-powered products that combines a 300-mA low-dropout (LDO) regulator with a low-current microprocessor reset function. Advanced Analogic Technologies' AAT3258 monitors its own output voltage and tells the microprocessor to go into its reset cycle well before a sagging battery causes the regulator output to drop. The chip also provides reset timing during initial power-up, as it's common to require a 150-ms delay to ensure the supply and microprocessor are stabilized before releasing the RESET line. Pricing starts at $0.76 per unit in 1000-piece lots.
