Automotive ISM-Band Transmitter Meets Worldwide Standards

Don Tuite  |   ED Online ID #9257  |   December 8, 2004

The AS3977, a novel multichannel narrow-band RF transmitter from Austria Microsystems, supports frequency-division multiple-access and time-division multiple-access modes for redundant data transmission over distances up to one mile for remote-keyless-entry car access control systems and tire-pressure-monitoring applications.

This frequency-shift/amplitude-shift-keying transmitter can be used for remote-control units, cordless alarm systems, remote metering, and low-power telemetry. The device, which supports the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) radio bands, is the first such product to be approved by the U.S. FCC, Japan's ARIB, and Europe's ETSI.

The AS3977 operates anywhere from 300 to 1000 MHz. It's based on a delta-sigma-controlled fractional-n synthesizer phase-locked loop with a fully integrated voltage-controlled oscillator. Its programmable amplifier delivers 20 to +8 dBm, and it can support data rates up to 100 kbits/s.

Standard packaging is QFN16. Pricing starts at $1.25 in quantities of 100,000.
