Rising power density marks today's point-of-load (POL) dc-dc converters. Enpirion's 6-A EN5360, part of a POL product line that's already unique for integrating the inductor, achieves 700 W/in.3 More importantly from a layout perspective, it achieves 80 W/in.2 on a single-sided board.
Input voltages can range from 2.375 to 5.5 V. Seven standard output voltages are pin-selectable, or any output voltage from 0.8 V to VIN can be set via a resistor divider. With up to 6 A or 20 W of output power and efficiencies over 90%, the EN5360 can be used in a sequenced startup with a programmable soft-start time and a separate enable function. It also boasts overcurrent, short-circuit, overvoltage, undervoltage, and thermal shutdown features.
The EN5360 comes in a dual flat no-lead (DFN) TSSOP. It requires only four external components, so the entire converter can occupy as little as 163 mm2 on a single-sided circuit board or 138 mm2 on a double-sided board. Maximum height is 2.2 mm. The converter comes in standard and lead-free package options. Pricing is $7.45 each for orders in 1000-unit quantities. Product evaluation boards are available.
