Tiny Package Houses 550-mA, 1-MHz Synchronous Boost DC-DC Converter

Staff  |   ED Online ID #20786  |   February 27, 2009

The LTC3535 dual-channel, 1-MHz, current-mode synchronous boost dc-dc converter from Linear Technology offers integrated output disconnect and soft-start. Its internal 550-mA switches deliver output voltages as high as 5.25 V from an input voltage range of 0.7-V startup, or 0.5 V when running to 5 V, making it ideal for single-cell or multicell alkaline/nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) as well as lithium-ion (Li-ion) and lithium-polymer applications, according to the company.

Each of the LTC3535’s channels has its own power input and is completely independent, offering maximum design flexibility. For example, one channel can deliver up to 50 mA of continuous output current at 3.3 V while the other channel delivers up to 100 mA at 1.8 V to power a microcontroller from a single alkaline cell. The 1-MHz switching frequency minimizes external component sizes while providing up to 94% efficiency.

Combined with its compact 3- by 3-mm, DFN-12 package, the LTC3535’s dual-channel boost provides a tiny and efficient solution for handheld applications, according to the company. Its Burst Mode operation lowers quiescent current to only 18 µA (both channels), providing extended battery runtime in handheld applications. Linear says that the LTC3535 is idea for handheld dual-boost applications where small solution size and battery runtime are defining factors.

The LTC3535EDD is available from stock in a 12-lead, 3- by 3-mm dual flat no-lead (DFN) package. Pricing starts at $2.95 each in lots of 1000.
