Tuners for set-top boxes, DVRs, PC TVtuner cards, and the like keep getting simpler to design in and less demanding to assemble into end products. Anadigics’ AIT1032 1-GHz double-conversion tuner implements upconverter, downconverter, voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), synthesizer, RF and IF amplifier, and RF and IF gain control functions with a combination of gallium-arsenide (GaAs) and silicon technologies. It’s designed to avoid interference in MoCA-enabled (Multimedia Over Coax Alliance) applications.

The device provides separate 45-MHz IF outputs for digital and analog signals, with 78-dB (typical) conversion gain on the digital side, with an adjustable IF amp with a 45-dB gain control range. To support those legacy TV receivers that are still out there, the analog output provides 65-dB conversion gain. On the input, the signal chain starts with a low-noise amplifier (LNA) with 35 dB of gain-control range. To trim external parts count, the AIT1032 includes on-chip oscillator tank circuits that don’t require postassembly tweaking (see the figure).

To keep design and assembly simple, the AIT1032 only needs a single +5-V supply. Additionally, there is a full reference design. The 48-pin surface-mount package is 7 by 7 by 1 mm and complies with the European Union’s Restrictions on Hazardous Substances. Now available, the AIT1032 costs $4.31 in quantities of 5000 units.
