A Must-Have UMPC Add-On
Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPC) like Samsung's Q1B were out in full force at CES 2008, so I decided to leave my laptop at home. It was replaced by a combination of the Samsung Q1B UMPC, the iGo Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard and the Targus Rechargable Bluetooth Laser Notebook Mouse.

Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-ray
Sharp’s BD-HP20U Blu-ray player is the ideal match for the Aquos LC52D64U HDTV — as long as you have an HDMI cable to connect the two. This enables bi-directional communication, which lets the TV jump to the Blu-ray player display as soon as a disk is entered, and gives the user control through either device’s remote.

Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-ray
Samsung’s BD-P1400 Blu-ray player employs chips from Silicon Optix to deliver some impressive video and audio presentations. While I coupled it with a Sharp HDTV (the Aquos LC52D64U), the use of HDMI and the HDTV’s Aquos-Link support allowed the Samsung player to integrate as easily as Sharp’s own Blu-ray player.

Logitech Harmony 1000
I anticipate the day when gadgets like Logitech’s Harmony 1000 Universal Remote will be less in-demand. That will mean HDMI interconnects have finally allowed one device’s remote to serve multiple functions. Since that day is far off, I found the Harmony 1000 invaluable with my mix of devices, including Sharp’s Aquos LC52D64U HDTV, its BD-HP20U Blu-ray player and and Samsung’s BD-P1400 Blu-ray player.

Sharp’s Aquos LC52D64U (Fig. 1) takes light and thin to a new level. It’s about 20 percent lighter and 25 percent slimmer than prior models and most of the competition. It is only 3.75-in at its thickest point and weighs just over 55 pounds.
