ADC Arrays For Beam-Forming Applications
Sponsored by: ANALOG DEVICES
What kinds of applications use large arrays of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs)? Phased-array radar systems and medical imaging are two major application areas. Many of these applications place common demands on the ADCs and the analog front ends (AFEs) that drive them, particularly in terms of noise performance, power consumption, and pin count. How are those apps alike? The core concept is beam shaping. While radar designers developed...
DAQ Module Measures Temp, Voltage, Or Provides Digital Control
The USB-based 8-channel DLP-IO8-G data-acquisition module from Future Technology Devices provides an easy and economical means to gather temperature data, measure voltage, and provide digital control.
HDD Pre-Amp Delivers Blazing 2.5-Gbit/s Operating Speed
Agere Systems is now sampling its TrueStore PA7800 pre-amplifier IC, which brings its fast operating speed of 2.5 Gbits/s and lower power consumption to the new generation of hard disk drive heads.
Buffer IC Uses Analog Techniques To Extend Two-Wire Buses
Now in full production, the IES5501 two-wire bus buffer IC from Hendon Semiconductors is designed for extending and expanding I²C, SMBus, PMBus, IPMB, and similar two-wire bus systems.
S-Video Drivers Increase Battery Life While Removing Glitches
Intersil’s ISL59114 and ISL59116 low-power composite video drivers provide low-pass reconstruction filters for smoothing out switching glitches and quantization noise.
Digital Potentiometer Is Simple To Program
The CAT5126 Digitally Programmable Potentiometer (DPP) from Catalyst Semiconductor Inc. offers one-time wiper programmability via a simple two-wire interface. Designers can set the wiper’s value after power-on and disable the interface to prevent further adjustment.
RS-485 Transceivers Boast Switchable Termination, High ESD Protection
Two new families of RS-485 transceivers are aimed at systems with 3.3-V power supplies. The LTC2854/LTC2855 feature switchable, integrated termination, while the LTC2850/TC2851/LTC2852 offer industry-standard pinouts and support data rates to 20 Mbits/s.
Whatever Happened To The Electronics Hobbyist?
Electronics used to be one of the greatest hobbies ever. There were literally hundreds of thousands of people who used to play around with electronics as an avocation or part-time interest and activity. Kids learned electricity and electronics in school. As a result, when they ended up getting the bug, they ended up not only adopting electronics as a hobby, but also made it into a career. You don't see too much of that going on anymore. So what the devil happened to the electronic hobbyist?
Analog Computers
I have sometimes wondered if we shouldn't bring back a modern version of an analog computer. Does that make sense? Maybe it could be a solution to some ugly calculus-intensive problem like in a research situation. A special analog computer could be built to simulate the equations quickly and with the ability to play around with the various variables and so on. It would certainly be smaller, cheaper and more precise than the monsters of yesteryear.
Tiny Analog Switches Feature Low On-Resistance
A pair of low-voltage single-pole, double-throw analog switches from Intersil offers ultra-low and flatter on-resistance, resulting in better signal quality in battery-powered, portable, and handheld devices.
Diverse Power Entities Sang From The Same Page In 2006
Design challenges and economic opportunity both opened up for the power community in 2006, as industry, government and the energy utilities got in sync on efficiency issues.
PCI Express IP Cores Target FPGAs
Designers can use the IP to implement PCI Express applications on Lattice Semiconductor's LatticeECP2M and LatticeSCM FPGA families.
High-Sensitivity Light-To-Frequency Converter Adds Package Option
Previously offered only in an 8-pin SOIC surface-mount package, the TSL238 high-sensitivity light-to-frequency converter is now available in a 4-pin "T" surface-mount package that is lead-free and RoHS compliant.
electronica 2006 UPDATE: 15.11.2006
16-Bit, 8-Channel ADC Offers Programmable Input Ranges and Fault Protection to ±25 V
Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC1859, a 16-bit, 8-channel, 100-ksps analog-to-digital converter offering software programmable input ranges that are fault-protected to ±25V.
Design Kit On Way For A/M-S 0.18-Micron Process
Implemented for use with Cadence physical design flows, X-FAB Silicon Foundries' first design kit for its modular 0.18-µm analog/mixed-signal CMOS process will be available by the end of 2006.

ANALOG DEVICES
What’s new in analog switches and multiplexers? These chips are extending their reach from industrial and instrumentation equipment and communications infrastructure to consumer gear like AV receivers and cell phones, which need bandwidth and signal-amplitude flexibility. Component video needs larger switch arrays than composite video, but the configurations are much the same. Cell-phone audio requires simple single-pole single-throw...
Sigma-Delta ADC Line Adds Lower-Cost Version
The CS5530 has been added to Cirrus Logic's CS5531/32/33/34 family of integrated delta-sigma analog-to-digital converters (ADCs).
