Casio Picks eSOL RTOS For New Cameras
Casio has decided to extend its use of the eSOL PrKERNELv4 real-time operating system (RTOS) suites in the latest EXILIM digital cameras. Casio selected PrKERNELv4 because of the success the company has had with it in early version of the EXILIM cameras, according to eSOL. PrKERNELv4 offers task and memory management for real-time applications, and serves as the primary foundation within the EXILIM Card EX-S10 and EXILIM Zoom EX-Z80.
Ford Edge Using Light-Diffusing Compounds From RTP
When Visteon, a global automotive supplier, needed a LED lighting solution for the interior of the Ford Edge crossover SUV, it chose the latest technology from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors that uses RTP Company’s light-diffusing plastic compounds. RTP and OSRAM worked closely together to develop the climate-control lighting in the Edge’s cockpit. The light-diffusing compounds provided an ideal contrast to the vehicle’s metallic finish.
The Hardware Acceleration Market Needs Open Industry Standards To Evolve
The importance of hardware-based acceleration is growing for specialized computing applications whose performance requirements exceed the capabilities of general-purpose CPUs. Couching algorithms in silicon can deliver orders-of-magnitude improvements in speed for cryptography, real-time video, 3D imaging, IP telephony, and other science, engineering, and business applications.

Garmin Picks ST SoC For New Nav Systems
Garmin has chosen STMicroelectronics’ Cartesio automotive-grade application processor for use in a range of new navigation systems, including the nüvi 205. The Cartesio is a system-on-a-chip (SoC), with an embedded GPS for navigation as well as telematics functions.
Broadcom Acquisition Boosts Blue-ray Prospects
Broadcom Corp. has acquired Sunext Design Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sunext Technology Co. Ltd., and has licensed certain optical disk reader and writer technology from Sunext Technology. Sunext, a privately held fabless semiconductor company, specializes in optical storage technologies.
TI Reader IC Shrinks Size Of Tablet PC
Using a new reader chip from Texas Instruments, Motion Computing was able to shrink the printed-circuit board (PCB) area of the RFID system in its C5 Tablet PC to the size of a quarter. The lightweight Motion C5 mobile clinical assistant helps physicians and nurses securely and quickly identify patients, medications, and assets.
Use Ada For Better Safety, Security, And Reliability
The choice of programming languages is one of the most critical decisions in any programming project. And there’s no shortage of choices. But sometimes, development speed has to take a backseat to security and safety, as in high-integrity applications. And that's where Ada excels.
Robots See With Sentek
Accurate analysis of a robot’s surroundings requires good sensors. Bill Wong takes a look at the Hokuyo laser range finder in conjunction with Whitebox Robotics’ PC-Bot.

Linux For Dummies, 8th Edition
When my $400 ultra-compact Eee PC arrived I wanted to harvest that bounty of freeware people say is out there. So I thought I really needed a dummies book if I was to go beyond the bundled software in the new machine. The Dummies book turned out to be useless unless I wanted to replace my native Linux with the one on the book's disc.
Free Software Turns One Computer Into Two
PC users who want to share their computer with another member of the household, or maybe just a house guest during the holidays, can download a free version of a software package that lets two people use the same computer at one time.
Harmonic Distortion And Board Layout
Given that printed-circuit boards (PCBs) are made from material that is practically speaking electrically linear (i.e. constant impedance), then why can it introduce nonlinearities into a signal? The answer is that the board layout is “spatially non-linear” with respect to where currents flow.
Modules Simplify ZigBee Development
AeroComm’s compact ZB2430 module (25.4mm by 34.3mm) provides developers with a quick, reliable way of utilizing ZigBee. It is a complete system that can be used without having to go through FCC approval since you don’t modify the 2.4GHz RF or 802.15.4 protocol stacks.
8051 Drives ZigBee Kit
Silicon Laboratories has a great crop of high performance 8051 microcontrollers and one of those is packaged on each of the boards in its ZigBee development kit.
Motorola Licenses TAT Cascades
Motorola has signed an agreement to license The Astonishing Tribe's (TAT's) Cascades interface to incorporate into the user interface framework of some of its mobile devices.

EDA Alert: December 4, 2007
Two changes will occur in manufacturing test products in response to market pressures: embedded compression tools and logic built-in self test (LBIST) will converge; and manufacturing test tools will be integrated with yield and failure-analysis tools and looped back into design tools to improve yield for ICs at 65 nm and below.
