DC Power-Supply Family Provides Eight Times More Power Than Predecessors
Agilent Technologies has introduced its N8700 series of dc power supplies. With capabilities identical to the N5700 series, the company says it has improved upon the older model with more than eight times the power density. This new series’ power density, at 5200 W in a 2U-high (2-EIA rack unit) package, also has PC-standard I/O with LAN (LXI-C), USB, and GPIB included.
4-A Multi-cell Battery-Charger Controllers Require No Blocking Diode
The LTC4012, LTC4012-1, and LTC4012-2 switch-mode battery-charger controllers from Linear Technology target multiple battery chemistries. The LTC4012 supports Li-ion/polymer, NiMH, NiCd, and sealed lead-acid battery chemistries in single-cell and multi-cell configurations. The LTC4012-1 and LTC4012-2 use a programmable internal resistor divider to charge from one to four series lithium cells at multiples of 4.1 and 4.2 V, respectively.
3-MHz DC-DC Converter Improves Efficiency, Density In Portable Devices
The ADP2108 dc-dc converter from Analog Devices is designed to provide better energy efficiencies in battery-powered portable devices. Balancing low operating input voltage capability, low quiescent current, and small size, the 3-MHz, 600-mA device offers designers more flexibility in meeting strict power and printed-circuit board (PCB) area budgets without increasing battery capacity, according to the company.
Overvoltage Protectors Also Provide USB Charger And ESD Protection
The MAX14529E and MAX14530E overvoltage protectors (OVPs) from Maxim Integrated Products provide high-current USB charger detection. They use an integrated MOSFET to protect low-voltage systems against voltage faults up to 28 V, eliminating the need for an external nFET. Additionally, they provide robust electrostatic-discharge (ESD) protection (Human Body Model).

LDO Regulators Deliver Precision Power For Core Voltage Rails
Analog Devices has introduced a family of low-dropout (LDO) regulators optimized for low input voltage and output voltage operation where low-noise power is needed. Available in 800-mA, 1.2-A, and 2-A load current ranges, the low-VIN, single-rail input ADP1740, ADP1741, ADP1752, ADP1753, and ADP1754 offer improved conversion efficiency and superior power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR) to support today’s high-performance signal chains, according to the company.
Quad PSE Controller Meets IEEE 802.3at PoE+ Specs
The LTC4266 four-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) controller from Linear Technology targets power-sourcing equipment (PSE) that’s required to provide IEEE 802.3at (25.5 W) or proprietary higher power levels. It provides up to 100 W over four-pair Ethernet cabling. Also, it fully complies with the new IEEE 802.3at PoE+ standard and is backward compatible with the prior IEEE 802.3af PoE standard.
Step-Up DC-DC Converters Increase Battery Runtimes In Portable Apps
The ADP1612 and ADP1613 step-up dc-dc converters from Analog Devices increase battery runtimes in portable industrial, instrumentation, and consumer applications such as thin-film-transistor (TFT) LCDs or cell phones, where low power consumption is required and board space is at a premium. Designers can use them to boost input voltages as low as 1.8 V up to output voltages as high as 20 V.
65-W Open-Frame Power Supplies Fit 1U Applications
The PSA065 and PSA065M open-frame power supplies from Phihong comply with the CE low-voltage directive. Available in a 2- by 4-in. package that’s 1.11 in. tall and weighs 6.35 oz, these single-output, 65-W devices fit in 1U applications and are available in 12-, 24-, and 48-V output models.
Generic DC-AC Inverters Fit CCFL-Backlit LCD Applications
The Smart Force SFW series of low-cost generic dc-ac inverters from Endicott Research Group targets universal use across a broad range of CCFL-backlit (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp) LCD applications. The series comprises 12 parts that cover a wide range of applications for ease of selection and pricing that’s competitive with key offshore competitors, according to the company.
Battery-Charger ICs Provide Instant-On Capability
The latest member of the SMB339 family of battery-charger ICs from Summit Microelectronics, the SMB329, integrates additional features such as instant-on even with a dead battery and real-time charge current monitoring. Like its predecessors, the third-generation device’s parameters are programmable in nonvolatile memory for power-up configuration and in volatile memory for in-system adjustments via the I2C host interface.
Power MOSFET Technology Extends Battery Life In Portable Devices
Designed for highly efficient, low- RDS(ON) power MOSFETs, the V-Tr FET technology developed by SilTerra Malaysia Sdn Bhd and South Sea Semiconductor Ltd. features a narrow-trench gate electrode with a cell density of 488 million per square inch.
