Powerline Communication Standards Continue To Struggle
Powerline networking puts OFDM on the ac powerline for high-speed data transfers over the installed power wiring. There are no new wires. The standard ac outlets are your network connections. That has to be as convenient as wireless, since every room or area in your home probably has multiple ac outlets. Yet the powerline networking segment of home networking is in a muddle and not doing as well as it could.

Lightning And Surge Protectors Suit Telecom Equipment
L-com has added two lightning and surge protectors for telecommunications equipment to its line of products. The HGLN-CAT5J is fully compatible with industry-standard 802.3af Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) devices and 10/100 BaseT Ethernet networks, protecting both Ethernet data pairs as well as the PoE dc power feed. The AL-D4W-DP protects DSL and telephone lines from transients or surges caused by lightning strikes.
High-Voltage Rectifier Reduces Footprint In Power-Supply Applications
The SBR10U200P5 Super Barrier Rectifier (SBR) from Diodes Inc. improves compact power-supply functionality and performance in notebook power adapters, universal chargers, telecom power supplies, and similar products, the company says. It comes in a compact, thermally efficient, proprietary PowerDI5 package that enables it to serve as an output diode in power-supply output stages, a catch diode in buck regulator circuits, a freewheeling diode in motor drive circuits, and a boost diode.
European Power Developments Defy Global Downturn
The tight economy is applying pressure on designers with tighter power requirements. A smaller power footprint can go a long way in increasing revenue—both for customers and for the designers themselves. These efforts in eliminating waste are finding results in set-top boxes, organic photovoltaic (PV) devices, and TVS diodes.
25- And 35-W Power Supplies Provide Range Of Output Voltages
The 25-W LS25 and 35-W LS35 ac-dc single-output power supplies from TDK-Lambda provide 3.3-, 5-, 12-, 15-, 24-, 36-, and 48-V dc output voltages. They also operate with a universal ac input of 88 to 264 V ac (47 to 63 Hz) and can withstand input surges of up to 300 V ac. These enclosed devices carry the CE Mark and are certified to UL/EN/IEC60950-1 safety agency standards as well.
Low-Cost Power Supplies Squeeze Into 1U Space
The VCT60 series of 60-W ac-dc power supplies from XP Power fit into a standard 1U space, measuring 2 by 4 by 0.95 in., targeting applications requiring an economical power supply that fits into an industry-standard 2- by 4-in footprint. The first product in this open-frame family comprises 10 single-output models that provide popular nominal output voltages from +5 to +30 V dc.
60-V Step-Down Controller Offers 150°C Maximum Junction Temperature
The H-grade version of the LTC3824 step-down dc-dc controller from Linear Technology offers a low quiescent current in a small, thermally enhanced MSOP-10 package. Its –40°C to 150°C operating junction temperature range is guaranteed, suiting automotive and industrial applications subjected to high ambient temperatures and demanding a small solution for output voltages ranging from 0.8 V to VIN at up to 5 A.
DC-DC Footprints On The Sands Of Time
The footprint of a dc-dc converter is, to me, an interesting topic. There is a certain amount of history to it that’s kind of fascinating. Also, it really plays heavily into the decisions power designers make about what solution they’re going to use and whether, for example, another vendor is actually a true second source. Over time, the dc-dc converter footprint has, in general, experienced some changes. You might also say it has changed the industry to some degree.
Reference Design Meets Latest Energy Star Standby Power Spec
The RDK-203 reference design kit from Power Integrations includes a dual-rail power supply with high loop bandwidth and peak power for home systems and a 650-W audio power rating. According to the company, it enables developers to easily meet new and emerging standby power usage regulations for consumer audio-video equipment.
Single Chip Integrates LED Driver And Controller
The PowerPSoC family of integrated embedded power controllers from Cypress Semiconductor represents the industry’s first single-chip solution for controlling and driving high-power LEDs, according to the company. The devices integrate four constant-current regulators and four 32-V MOSFETs with the Cypress PSoC programmable system-on-a-chip, which includes a microcontroller, programmable analog and digital blocks, and memory.
dsPIC Controllers Take On Heavy-Duty SMPS Control Roles
Digital power continues to move deeper into the mainstream. Last month, Microchip Technology introduced seven PIC microcontrollers customized for switch-mode power supply (SMPS) applications. Microchip has offered SMPS controller chips before, but the new, in-circuit programmable, 16-bit dsPIC digital signal controllers (DSCs) are smaller and offer twice the performance (40 MIPS) at a lower price than the old SMPS family.
Tiny POL Converters Deliver High Power Densities
FDK Corp. has added five products to its DK series of non-isolated point-of-load (POL) dc-dc converters. These devices deliver up to 6 A of output current at power densities up to 860 W/cubic inch in an SMD package and up to 4 A of output current at power densities up to 760 W/cubic inch in a SIP. Under natural convection, they also deliver the full rated output current with no derating in ambient temperatures up to 85°C in the SMD package and up to 70°C in the SIP.
Low-Noise Step-Up Converter Pumps Out 600 mW
