RF Measurements For Cellular Phones And Wireless Data Systems
The title accurately tells what this book is about, but there is so much content here I do not know where to start. Essentially the book is about how to test and measure the wide range of wireless gear now being developed with an emphasis on cellular equipment. It is pretty rare to find a book on this subject and especially one that is reasonably up to date. Well, I’ve found one.
Ethernet-Based Power Source For Industrial Control May Provide New Design Opportunities For Analog Designers
Clock Generator Solves Most Nightmares
The Si5338 from Silicon Laboratories provides up to four separate clock outputs, each at an independent frequency, with any common output voltage format. Designers can use it to time four different circuits such as embedded processors, FPGAs, ASICs, memory chips, or PHY chips.
Use Software Filters To Reduce ADC Noise
Let’s say you chose a particular microcontroller for its 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC). You built up your system, and although the ADC gives you 12 bits of resolution, the lower couple of bits are frustrating and “unreliable,” to put it nicely. Fortunately, you can reduce or remove this noise with one of two different types of software filters.
Motor Controller Drives Low-Power, Single-Coil, BLDC Fans And Motors
The AH5792 smart motor controller from Diodes Inc. can be used to drive low-power, single-coil, brushless dc (BLDC) fans and motors. This single-chip solution integrates a Hall sensor and amplifier, complete digital control circuitry, and a full bridge output driver into a low-profile, SOT553 package.
Characterizing High-Speed Serial Communications Links Requires Some Analog Savvy
As serial-data standards go from fast to very fast, designers must devote a greater amount of time to the analog features of those high-speed signals. It’s no longer enough to remain in the digital domain with ones and zeros. To find and correct conditions that lead to potential problems—and thereby prevent those problems from showing up in the field—designers must check the parametric realm of their designs...
Behind The Bright Lights, LED Drivers Evolve To Meet New Requirements
High-brightness LEDs can generate usable levels of light with improved efficiency, longer lifetimes, and smaller dimensions than conventional light sources. Accurate current control is essential for an effective LED lighting solution, and a wide variety of LED driver ICs is available to help engineers optimize their designs.
MOSFETs Achieve A 0.55-mm Profile
According to Fairchild Semiconductor, its FDMA1027 and FDFMA2P853 can dissipate 60% more power than SC-70 MOSFETs. The company also says they have the lowest profile in the market, measuring 2 by 2 by 0.55 mm in micro-leadframe packages (MLPs).
Gen III Power MOSFETs Raze On Resistance
Representing one of three devices in Vishay Intertechnology’s latest MOSFET offerings, the SiR440DP features a maximum on resistance of 2.0 m? at a 4.5-V gate drive and 1.55 m? at a 10-V gate drive, which the company calls the lowest available for such a device.
Overvoltage Protection IC Reduces Board Space By 40%
Available in a 3- by 4- by 0.9-mm QFN-22 package, the NUS6189 promises to reduce board space by up to 40% by integrating four separate protection functions.
Hot-Plug Switch Outfits 12-V Backplanes
The DS4560 self-protected, resettable hot-plug switch promises to reduce the number of components necessary for the safe insertion and removal of systems on 12-V backplanes.
Ten Top Design Skills For Tough Times
Wall Street is crashing, credit is shrinking, the economy is sinking, and people everywhere are worried about keeping their jobs. On the other hand, electronic designers with unique and in-demand skills are enjoying the luxury of feeling reasonably secure about their current employment status. Many are even planning for a better and brighter future. During these difficult times, that’s a feeling all designers would like to experience.
Broadband Filter/ADC Driver Family Sports High Accuracy
A family of five single and dual low-pass active filter/analog-to-digital converter (ADC) driver amplifier devices from Linear Technology Corp. provides high performance and wide bandwidths.
IEEE Joins Information Campaign On Digital TV
The IEEE is joining the effort to ensure that people are aware of the switch to all-digital TV broadcasting next Feb. 17 and have the information and resources they need to accommodate the change. The organization also wants to ensure that consumers understand the benefits available to them by taking full advantage of the digital signal.
Scrappy IC Startup Challenges Big Guns With Lossy-Compression ADC For Ultrasound
With TI and Analog Devices duking it out for dominance in the front ends of the world’s ultrasound medical devices, it would take some audacity for a fabless startup to design its first product for the same market. But Samplify Systems has announced chips based on a lossy data-compression algorithm.
Heart Monitor Uses Quickfilter Signal Converter
HD Medical Group Ltd. has selected the QF4A512 four-channel programmable signal converter from Quickfilter Technologies for use in the ViScope 100 cardiac anomaly indicator. Similar in size and shape to a PDA, the ViScope 100 allows physicians to detect anomalies relating to the mechanical functioning of the heart.

Wolfson DACs Enhance Blu-ray Player’s Audio
Pioneer Electronics has chosen the WM8740 high-performance stereo digital-to-analog converter (DAC) from Wolfson Microelectronics for use in Pioneer’s latest Blu-ray home theater disc player. Pioneer said the player (model BDP-LX71 in the EU and Japan and model BDP-05FD in North America) aims to outperform current desktop players and bring a true cinema experience to the home.
Verilog-AMS Update Integrates With HDL Standard
The latest version of Accellera’s Verilog-Analog Mixed-Signal (AMS) standard, Verilog-AMS 2.3, unifies the standard’s previous version with IEEE Std. 1364-2005, the Verilog hardware description language (HDL) standard. Verilog-AMS 2.3 enables users to develop standard and tightly integrated Verilog-AMS modules, and allows EDA software tool developers to implement EDA tools without ambiguities in the language interpretation.
Maxwell's Equations For Dummies?
One of the perks of being an Electronic Design editor is that we get lots of books that publishers would like us to review. The last time I went through the stack, A Student’s Guide to Maxwell’s Equations by Daniel Fleisch caught my eye. I settled down in the nearest chair and started to skim. Then I slowed down and started to read. Professor Fleisch is a great scientific communicator.
