Current-Limited Load Switch Simplifies Hot-Swap Management
The AAT4614 current-limited p-channel MOSFET power switch from Advanced Analogic Technologies targets high-side load-switching applications. Designed to protect peripheral ports from short-circuit and overvoltage events, it combines reverse current blocking with programmable current-limit capability and an integrated fault flag in a silicon footprint that’s up to 30% smaller than traditional implementations.
Save Costs With Peak-Rated Power Supplies
Traditionally, the selection of power supplies is based upon the expected maximum total system power, calculated as volts × amps = watts. But for some applications, a power supply with a peak current or peak power rating may provide a significant cost savings. For example, if the power supply’s load includes electric motors, disk drives, pumps, fans, actuators, or other components that require an initial startup current that’s much higher than the steady...
IEEE Approves Low-Power IC Standard
Under the number IEEE 1801, the IEEE has approved the Standard for Design and Verification of Low Power Integrated Circuits. Also known as Unified Power Format 2.0 (UPF 2.0), the standard was developed by Accellera and currently carries the support of multiple vendors and is in use worldwide.
Power.org Releases New Power Instruction Set Architecture, Version 2.06
Power.org has released Power Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) Version 2.06, which incorporates significant advances for server and embedded applications that improve performance and efficiency and speed design cycles.
Power-Supply Reference Design Achieves 94% Efficiency
The RD212 power-supply reference design from Fairchild Semiconductor provides up to 94% efficiency and low noise characteristics due to its zero voltage switching (ZVS) technique. This 200-W dc-dc power supply also provides 24-V output at 8 A and offers overvoltage protection, overload protection, overcurrent protection, abnormal overcurrent protection, and internal thermal protection to protect the power supply from adverse electrical events.
20-W Board-Mounted AC-DC Power Supply Offers Tiny Profile
Targeting low-power printed-circuit board (PCB) applications, the ECP20 series of 20-W ac-dc power supplies measure 2.64 by 1.57 by 0.73 in. Despite their compact size, though, these devices deliver 6.6 W per cubic inch and up to 87% efficiency.
Efficient POL Voltage Regulators Reduce System Size
The second generation (Gen2) of International Rectifier’s SupIRBuck integrated point-of-load (POL) voltage regulators targets energy-efficient high-performance server, storage, and networking communications applications. These devices deliver 4-, 8-, and 12-A output current with benchmark efficiency over the entire load range, according to the company.

Infinite Power Solutions unveils a major breakthrough in energy storage by achieving greater than 3 mAh of discharge capacity within a single cell of its thin-film micro-energy storage technology.
DC-DC Converter Drives 1-A Output Current With 93% Efficiency In Lighting Apps
The MBI6651 step-down dc-dc converter from Macroblock drives 1-A output current with efficiency up to 93%, according to the company. With merely 0.45-? of on resistance, it reduces the power consumption on ICs at the rated voltage. These features suit the MBI6651 for signage, decorative lighting (MR16), street lighting, and automotive lighting.
DC Blowers Provide Directional Cooling In Tight Spaces
Measuring 120 by 120 by 32 mm and 97 by 94 by 33 mm, respectively, the ODB600PT and ODB9733 dc blowers from Orion Fans suit use in space-constrained applications like fuel cells in hybrid vehicles, telecom equipment, and other powered products that require thermal management. According to the company, these low-profile blowers provide directional cooling similar to spot coolers in a flat, compact design.
Chevy Volt Put To The Test In GM’s Windtunnel
Despite a brief respite, gas prices are climbing again and consumers still have their eyes on fuel-efficient automobiles. The Chevy Volt, GM’s extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV), promises up to 40 miles of gasoline-free driving. The lithium-ion battery technology and cutting-edge combustion engine only account for part of that efficiency, though. The Volt’s body is the result of precise aerodynamic design. We recently spoke with Nina Tortosa, an aerodynamicist with GM, to find out more.
