FDK Corp. has added five products to its DK series of non-isolated point-of-load (POL) dc-dc converters. These devices deliver up to 6 A of output current at power densities up to 860 W/cubic inch in a surface-mount device (SMD) package and up to 4 A of output current at power densities up to 760 W/cubic inch in a small-inline package (SIP). Under natural convection, they also deliver the full rated output current with no derating in ambient temperatures up to 85°C in the SMD package and up to 70°C in the SIP.

Occupying an SMD footprint of less than 0.3 in2 (2 cm2) and an SIP footprint of less than 0.1 in2 (0.6 cm2), the converters provide considerable space savings over discrete on-board solutions, according to FDK. Their low height of 0.134 in. (3.4 mm) in the SMD package and 0.473 in. (12.0 mm) in the SIP makes them particularly suitable for high-density racks, blade systems, and low-profile consumer applications. They target telecommunications, data communications, computing, and industrial applications where board space, cost, height, efficiency, and reliable operation in elevated temperature environments are critical.

The new products consist of the FPDK12SR8003PSV (SMD 3 A), FPDK12SR8004PSV (SMD 4 A), FPDK12SR8006PSV (SMD 6 A), FPDK12TR8003PSV (SIP 3 A), and FPDK12TR8004PSV (SIP 4 A). The 3-A and 4-A SMD packages measure 0.657 by 0.402 by 0.134 in. (16.7 by 10.2 by 3.4 mm), the 6-A package measures 0.657 by 0.402 by 0.173 in. (16.7 by 10.2 by 4.4 mm), and the SIP models measure 0.472 by 0.394 by 0.185 in. (12.0 by 10.0 by 4.7 mm).

These converters operate from a 5.6-V dc to 14.0-V dc input and provide a tightly regulated programmable output voltage from 0.8 V dc to 6.6 V dc. They are true single-input converters, since they don’t require an external VCC (bias) supply for operation. All of the models feature programmable output voltage, remote ON/OFF, overcurrent and overtemperature protection, and startup into a pre-biased output. The SMD models additionally offer a power-good signal.

All of the DK series products comply with the European Union’s Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS). In quantities of 1000 pieces, the FPDK12SR8003PSV and FPDK12TR8003PSV 3-A converters cost $4.60; the FPDK12SR8004PSV and FPDK12TR8004PSV 4-A converters cost $5.10; and the 6-A FPDK12SR8006PSV costs $5.70. Lead time is six weeks. Samples are available now.
