High-Sensitivity Light-To-Frequency Converter Adds Package Option

Previously offered only in an 8-pin SOIC surface-mount package, the TSL238 high-sensitivity light-to-frequency converter is now available in a 4-pin "T" surface-mount package that is lead-free and Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliant. Like the TSL238D, the TSL238T version combines ultra-low-level light-measurement with surface-mount packaging benefits, but with the added benefits of a smaller footprint and package height. The TSL238T, from Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions (TAOS) Inc., can accurately measure a broad dynamic range of light levels — from bright sunlight to dim moonlight. The device does not require an external analog-to-digital converter because its output is a waveform whose frequency is directly proportional to the light intensity, enabling it to interface directly to a microprocessor. The TSL238T also has an output-enable pin that allows designers to feed the output of multiple devices into one microprocessor input port by enabling one TSL238T device at a time. The converter is characterized for operation over a -25°C to 70°C range.

The TSL238T in a 4-pin "T" package is available from TAOS Inc. and its authorized distributors. Suggested resale price is $1.67 in 1,000-piece quantities.
