Pioneer Electronics has chosen the WM8740 high-performance stereo digital-to-analog converter (DAC) from Wolfson Microelectronics for use in Pioneer’s latest Blu-ray home theater disc player. Pioneer said the player (model BDP-LX71 in the EU and Japan and model BDP-05FD in North America) aims to outperform current desktop players and bring a true cinema experience to the home.

The WM8740 24-bit, 192-kHz stereo DAC features a very high signal-to-noise ratio and ultra-low total harmonic distortion to provide a very high-fidelity audio experience. The disc player, which uses Pioneer’s proprietary high-quality video feature “Pure Cinema,” employs four WM8740 DACs.

”Pioneer adopted Wolfson’s DAC for this new application following extensive assessment of its sound quality,” according to a spokesperson for Pioneer Japan. “We recognized the WM8740’s excellent SNR performance and its ability to reproduce original sounds flawlessly.”
