The H-grade version of the LTC3824 step-down dc-dc controller from Linear Technology offers a low quiescent current in a small, thermally enhanced MSOP-10 package. Its –40°C to 150°C operating junction temperature range is guaranteed, suiting automotive and industrial applications subjected to high ambient temperatures and demanding a small solution for output voltages ranging from 0.8 V to VIN at up to 5 A. Its 4-V minimum input voltage supports automotive cold crank, and its 60-V maximum input voltage survives inductive load dumps without needing external clamping circuits.
The controller can be configured for continuous or Burst Mode operation, which reduces its no load current draw to only 40 µA and safely powers pre-biased loads. Its shutdown current is 7 µA. With 100% duty cycle capability, its low dropout voltage allows VOUT to approach VIN, extending battery runtime. Also, the LTC3824H can be programmed to a fixed frequency from 100 to 600 kHz. For noise-sensitive applications, it can be synchronized to an external clock over the same range.
The LTC3824H’s onboard MOSFET gate driver powers an external P-channel MOSFET to produce greater than 90% conversion efficiency. Its current-mode architecture provides fast line and load transient response as well as cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection. Additional features include programmable current limit and soft-start, along with overvoltage protection. Now available in a thermally enhanced MSOP-10 package, the LTC3824H starts at $2.25 each in 1000-piece pricing.
