Reference Design Puts Intel’s Moorestown Platforms In Mobile Devices

A robust and easy-to-implement reference design blueprint is now available for Intel’s next-generation mobile Internet device (MID) and smart phone platforms, code-named “Moorestown.” The reference design, which centers on NEC Electronics’ Briertown power management IC (PMIC) and Option’s GTM501L wireless module, will help to accelerate PMIC and 2G/3G communications module integration in Moorestown MID designs. In support of the reference design blueprint, the companies will provide extensive design assistance and collateral to support customers developing MIDs with the Moorestown platform. The PMIC combines power management, logic and user interfaces, plus audio and voice communications functions to maximize battery life, support high levels of integration and minimize board space for Internet and cellular network access, multimedia playback, navigation, gaming, social networking and other Web 2.0 and real-time Web applications. Created specifically for ultra-mobile devices, the Option GTM501 wireless Internet-access module is delivered in a space-efficient LGA package with optimum heat dissipation characteristics for small and thin devices. In HSUPA mode, the module delivers up to 5.76 Mbits per second (Mbps), and in HSDPA mode, it delivers up to 10.2 Mbps. NEC ELECTRONICS AMERICA INC., Santa Clara, CA. (800) 366-9782.
