Eight new Single-Board reconfigurable I/O (RIO) devices from National Instruments offer an integrated hardware option for embedded control and data acquisition applications. The sbRIO-96xx devices combine a real-time processor, a reconfigurable field-programmable gate array (FPGA), and analog and digital I/O on a single pc board. The company’s LabVIEW graphical software is used to design the embedded systems and customize NI Single-Board RIO hardware.

With the RIO standard architecture and LabVIEW, users can design and prototype control and embedded devices on CompactRIO hardware and deploy their systems to the lower-cost NI Single-Board RIO devices. No recoding is needed when transitioning from prototype to deployment, which can increase system reliability and shorten development time.

NI Single-Board RIO devices feature an industrial 266- or 400-MHz Freescale MPC5200 processor built on Power Architecture technology, the Wind River VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS), and the Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA. The onboard analog and digital I/O connects directly to the FPGA to provide low-level customization of timing and I/O signal processing. Users can expand the I/O capabilities using the devices’ three expansion slots for connecting any NI C-Series I/O module or custom modules that they develop. The devices operate at temperatures of -20°C to 55°C for use in thermally rugged applications, and have a 19- to 30-V dc power supply input and real-time clock with battery backup.
