Rugged SBC Gives Users Extremely Flexible I/O Capability

Designed specifically for the rugged defense and aerospace markets and applications (such as mission computing and embedded communications), the EP2A 6U VME single-board computer offers excellent flexibility, according to GE Fanuc Embedded Systems. The SBC incorporates a unique I/O set, with four fast HDLC-capable (High-level Data Link Control) serial ports (enabled by a PowerQUICC 2 device) that complement its Gigabit Ethernet, USB, and GPIO capabilities. Flexibility is enhanced by the inclusion of two PMC (PCI mezzanine card) sites, as well as the company’s AFIX (Additional Flexible Interface Xtension) card site, which allows custom functions to be added to the board quickly and at minimum cost.

The PMC and AFIX sites can be employed simultaneously without sharing I/O pins with the on-board I/O features. AFIX cards are available to support dual Mil-Std-1553B interfaces, SCSI, graphics, and flash-memory modules. Customized versions are also possible. The fast HDLC-capable serial channels and Gigabit Ethernet ports make the EP2A SBC well-suited to communications-oriented embedded computing applications. The board features a Freescale PowerPC MPC7448 processor and 1 Gbyte of DDR SDRAM. It also includes the latest Marvell Discovery V integrated system controller.

The EP2A comes in five air- and conduction-cooled environmental levels and is fully supported by comprehensive Deployed Test Software (BIT and BCS) and board support packages for VxWorks from Wind River Systems, LynxOS from LynuxWorks, and Integrity from Green Hills Software.
