Silicone Cables “Flex” Their Strength In Surgical Robotics

Flexibility and durability are crucial attributes for cables used in surgical robotic systems that must deliver 100% reliability. Cicoil has come up with a lightweight, silicone cable that’s claimed to meet those demands. It’s naturally more flexible than round PVC or stiffer flat PTFE cables, allowing for a tighter bend radius, weight and space savings, greater current-carrying capacity, and noise reduction. Each cable element is completely surrounded by a unique silicone that’s “self-healing” from small punctures. The halogen-free silicone encapsulation will not delaminate or degrade due to exposure to elements such as steam, water, alcohol, etc. The cables can incorporate any power, data, and/or video conductor, as well as single and multi-lumen tubing for air or liquid transfer, fiber optics, and other elements.
