The P4 LED emits 240 lumens at 1A, giving the device the industry’s highest luminous efficacy—100 lm/W at 350 mA with only one die, according to its manufacturer, Seoul Semiconductor Co. By comparison, conventional fluorescent and incandescent lights provide 70 lm/W and 15 lm/W, respectively. The company’s patented phosphor and packaging technologies give the P4 the highest luminous flux and superior reliability for thermal management. The device is designed for operation in a wide range of applications and industries, including vehicles, flashlights, LCD TV monitor backlights, projectors, home applications, street lights, decorative and architectural lighting, and others. Two types of P4 LEDs are available. One emits 80 lm at 350 mA (typical) and the other outputs 100 lm at 350 mA (typical). The company plans to improve the P4’s luminous efficacy to 135 lm/W by 2007 and to 145 lm/W by the first quarter of 2008. SEOUL SEMICONDUCTOR CO. LTD., Seoul, Korea.
