Embarking as the industry's fastest, and smallest serial UART to communicate over an SPI/I2C interface, the MAX3107 delivers data rates up to 24 Mb/s and measures 3.5 mm x 3.5 mm in a TQFN. Also, the UART is allegedly the industry’s first to integrate an oscillator to reduce the need for external clocking. The device interfaces an SPI or I2C synchronous serial microprocessor bus to asynchronous, serial data-communication ports, i.e., RS-485, RS-232, PROFIBUS, or IrDA. Its receiver and transmitter each have a 128-word-deep FIFO that reduces the intervals a host processor must dedicate for high-speed, high-volume data transfers. The MAX3107 operates from 2.35V to 3.6V and over an industrial temperature range from -40°C to +85°C. Price is $3.25 each/1,000. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
