Capable of driving external MOSFETs to at least 12 A per output, the MAX15023 dual-output, synchronous step-down controller operates over a wide input range of 4.5 to 28 V. It also integrates a ±1% accurate voltage reference to provide an accurate output voltage from 0.6 V to 85% of the input voltage. The switching frequency (200 kHz to 1 MHz), external compensation network, and current limit can be adjusted to optimize designs in terms of space, performance, and cost. Such versatility suits the MAX15023 for a variety of high-reliability applications such as telecommunications, networking, storage, and server equipment.

The controller uses cycle-by-cycle lossless current sensing to reduce power loss and eliminate the need for an external sense resistor. Additionally, the device’s adaptive synchronization eliminates external freewheeling Schottky diodes. Other features include the ability to start up monotonically when the output has a pre-biased voltage, as well as a proprietary, adaptive digital soft-start for controlled turn-on. Its two independent enable inputs and two independent power-good indicators feature precise turn-on/turn-off thresholds, which can be used for supply monitoring and power sequencing.

The MAX15023 is offered in a thermally enhanced, 4- by 4-mm, 24-pin thin quad flat no-lead (TQFN) package. It is fully specified over an extended temperature range of –40°C to 85°C. Prices start at $1.76 each for lots of 1000. An evaluation kit is available to speed designs; contact the factory for details.
