The Texas Instruments TLV320AIC3107 stereo audio codec enables CD-quality playback in cell phones, personal navigation devices, portable media players, and other mobile devices. It consumes just 15 mW at 48 kHz with a 3.3-V analog supply, extending playback time. Also, the codec integrates a stereo headphone amplifier and mono Class D speaker amplifier to substantially reduce board area and cut cost by 20% compared to discrete solutions, according to TI. The speaker amplifier can drive 1 W into an 8-Ω load.

Furthermore, the codec provides a stereo 8- to 96-ksample/s digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with a 97-dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and an 8- to 96-ksample/s analog-to-digital converter with 92-dB SNR. This SNR performance enables the codec to provide its CD-quality playback. The device includes an integrated phase-locked loop (PLL) and multiple inputs and outputs that are programmable in single-ended or fully differential configurations as well.

The TLV320AIC3107 comes in a 5- by 5-mm QFN-40 package. Available today, the codec costs $3.85 in 1000-piece quantities. A 3.5- by 3-mm WCSP package will be available in the first quarter of 2009.
