Although called electric cars, today’s no-emission vehicles should really be described as “electronic cars,” since from battery to microprocessor they incorporate a wide range of electronic components and design techniques. Electronic Design contributing editor John Edwards recently spoke with Don Wires, director of engineering for Amp Electric Vehicles, about how his company is creating opportunities for both electronics vendors and designers.

    Interesting interview. Electrical engineering students interested in this field should take note of the great advice.

    I don't agree that electric vehicles should be described as electronic. While electric cars certainly rely on more electronics than conventional vehicles, electronic systems have played important roles in conventional cars for decades now. The electric motor is the major difference here and that is definitely not electronic.
