White LED Driver Targets Automotive Display Backlighting Applications

The BD8113EFV-E2 white LED driver IC from Rohm Electronics provides constant current drive for white LED backlights in medium- to large-format automotive TFT-LCD displays (see the figure). This dual-channel driver also can handle up to 150 mA of constant current per channel with current-mode buck/boost dc-dc control, ensuring constant display brightness, even with unstable battery input voltages over the entire automotive temperature range.

The buck/boost configuration frees up the restriction on the number of LEDs that can be connected in series. Also, the BD8113EFV-E2 features a maximum input voltage of 36 V (supply voltage range: 5 to 30 V) and a wide operating temperature range of –40°C to 105°C. The IC comes in a lead-free HTSSOP-B24 (heatsink TSSOP) package. Its protection functions include undervoltage lockout (UVLO), overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, overcurrent protection, and short-circuit protection.

Inputs are provided for brightness modulation via pulse-width modulation (PWM) or VDAC control. Combined with Rohm’s SMLK15W high-heat-dissipation white LEDs, the BD8113EFV-E2 provides the optimal solution for medium to large automotive TFT-LCD applications like instrument clusters, infotainment displays, and multifunction display systems that incorporate multiple functions like radio, navigation, and HVAC, according to Rohm.
