Compact CAN Controller Needs No Cooling Fan

By Staff

October 08, 2008

Based on the AMD Elan 133-MHz SC520 processor, the CANminiBOX is a versatile, compact controller that is well-suited for embedded CANbus applications. The 128 Mbytes of SD-RAM is sufficient to control the pre-installed Linux OS, while a 512-Mbyte CompactFlash card can easily be upgraded. Other OSes, such as QNX and VxWorks, are also available. Power consumption is less than 6 W, ensuring the reliability of passive, fanless cooling. The DIN-rail-mounted units measure only 3 by 2 by 4.7 in. Front-panel interface connections include 10/100-Mbit/s Ethernet, an RS-232 serial port, a CAN port, and one USB1.1 port. Status LEDs are also front-panel mounted. Even with these connections, the unit weighs less than 1 lb. The controllers run off 10 to 28 V dc, making them well-suited for vehicle applications. Rated ambient temperature range is 0 to 50°C. All inputs are ESD protected to 2 kV. The CANminiBOX is available now starting at $795. SAELIG CO. INC., Pittsford, NY. (888) 772-3544.
