ITS World Congress puts driverless cars on the streets of New York

Mark David, editorial director, interviews Patrick McGowan chairman of technical demonstrations at 2008 ITS World Congress. For live demonstrations, ITS turned 10th Avenue into a live demonstration area for autonomous cars and active safety systems. McGowan explains that the demonstrations looked at vehicles of the future, that is "vehicles that do not crash," combining GPS, radar and other automated driving technologies. The demonstrations show that technology is ready today to save lives while simultaneously enhancing productivity and saving fuel by reducing congestion.
