Five leading embedded single board computer manufacturers have announced the publication of a new industry standard for small form factor embedded computer boards. Dubbed the Embedded Platform for Industrial Computing, or EPIC, the standard provides a platform on which to build next-generation embedded systems for industrial, medical, military, transportation and commercial applications. The 4.5" x 6.5" EPIC form factor is sized about halfway between PC/104 and EBX-type boards and contains a PC/104 module stack area, a tall CPU and power zone, and multiple I/O zones. Published as an open standard by Micro/sys, Octagon Systems, VersaLogic Corp., WinSystems and Ampro Computers Inc., the specification is available for download free of charge from the organization’s web site.
