The ThinkPad X series of ultraportable notebook computers has an extra-light and extra-thin design targeted to highly mobile users. These IBM notebooks are about 1 in. thick and boast a starting travel weight of 3.1 lbs. Their design also includes a 12.1-in. thin-film transistor (TFT) display.

A compact flash slot gives users a seamless method for transferring information between tools like digital cameras and handheld information devices. Also, all of the models may be powered by the Mobile Pentium III processor at 600 MHz or by the Mobile Celeron processor at 500 MHz.

The ThinkPad X family features titanium composite construction, easy-open covers, and ThinkPad keyboards with the patented TrackPoint pointing device. On the top edge of the display, the UltraPort connector attaches to digital cameras and other devices. A lightweight UltraBase X2 media slice lets mobile users take advantage of media and storage devices on the road.

IBM expects short-range device-to-device connectivity through Bluetooth wireless technology options by the end of the year. These will include a PC card and a device for the UltraPort connector. Commonality across ThinkPad commercial product lines lets users interchange port replicator and docking solutions, Communications Bay Mini PCI cards, UltraPort connector solutions, memory, power adapters, and other items in the ThinkPad T, A, and X series lines.

Ranging from $2199 to $3099, they come with either Windows 98 or 2000. IBM offers personalized web-based support, a three-year limited warranty, and 24-hour toll-free hardware support through the warranty period.
