With the AD6650 diversity receiver chip, designers of wireless basestations can quickly and easily implement a GSM/EDGE receiver with improved performance and lower cost. EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Environment) is the higher data-rate version of GPRS using 8PSK to get data speeds up to 384 kbits/s. The receiver chip consists of variable gain amplifiers to implement automatic gain control, an IF-to-baseband I&Q demodulator, analog low-pass filters, and dual analog-to-digital converters. An on-chip synthesizer with integrated voltage-controlled oscillator drives the I&Q demodulators. The AD6650 can accommodate IF inputs of 70 to 300 MHz. AD6650 samples are available now. Full production is slated for the fall. Pricing is $20 in 1000-unit quantities.
