Designed to deliver complete signal conditioning and conversion capabilities to portable and battery-powered products, the ADS7871 low-power data acquisition system (DAS) integrates a myriad of features in a single SSOP-28. These include a 14-bit, 48 ksamples/s successive approximation (SAR) a/d converter, four-channel differential/eight-channel single-ended multiplexer (MUX), programmable gain amplifier (PGA), precision voltage reference, reference buffer amplifier, clock generator, and a serial interface. For low-level signals, the PGA requires no external amplification or impedance buffering between the signal source and a/d converter input and delivers gains of 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, and 20 V/V. Additionally, its offset voltage is automatically zeroed. Other features of the data acquisition (DAQ) chip include an internal reference that is trimmed and that exhibits a typical drift of 10 ppm/°C and a power consumption of 8.5 mW in operation and 5 mW in standby mode. The new DAS is priced at $4.75 each/1,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924 ext 4500.
