Optocoupler’s Enhanced Isolation Suits Industrial IPM Motor Control

The compact TLP754 optocoupler IC from Toshiba Electronics Europe provides a 5-kV rms isolation interface between an intelligent power module (IPM) and its control circuitry.

The compact TLP754 optocoupler IC from Toshiba Electronics Europe provides a 5-kV rms isolation interface between an intelligent power module (IPM) and its control circuitry. The device is built around a long-life gallium-aluminium-arsenide (GaAlAs) infrared LED that is optically coupled to an integrated, high-gain, high-speed photodetector IC. An internal Faraday noise shield ensures a guaranteed common-mode transient immunity of ±20 kV/μs. Combining guaranteed operation at temperatures from –40°C to 125°C with a minimum input-to-output isolation voltage of 5000 V rms (ac, 1 min), the TLP754 suits motor control and inverter applications designed for noisy, extended temperature industrial environments. It is supplied in a DIP8 package measuring 9.6 by 7.6 by 3.6 mm. A wide supply voltage of –0.5 V to 30 V and a wide output voltage of 4.5 V to 30 V enhance design flexibility, while a maximum input current of just 1.3 mA meets requirements for high-efficiency designs. Data rates of 1 Mbit/s are guaranteed thanks to a maximum propagation delay time and pulse-width distortion rating of 550 ns and 400 ns, respectively.
