FPGAs With SERDES Improve Fuel Efficiency

Lattice Semiconductor’s ECP3 family of low-cost FPGAs is AEC-Q100-certified for the automotive sector. Designed for driver assistance applications such as the replacement of wing mirrors with camera systems, the FPGAs can significantly reduce fuel consumption. The family is serializer-deserializer (SERDES) enabled, featuring four 3-Gbit/s SERDES, but using only 110 mW per channel, which is around half the power of comparable multi-protocol SERDES. The devices also include powerful digital-signal processing, high-density on-chip memory, programmable DDR3 memory interfaces, and up to 35k lookup tables (LUTs). Six banks of configurable I/O are included. There are six parts in the new family, comprising two capacities and three package options, as small as 10 by 10 mm.
